The auctioning of a priceless Fabergé egg at an Oxford college coincides with the gruesome murder of a local gangster from the city"s growing underworld. When two other individuals meet similarly grisly ends, Morse not only believes all three deaths are connected but that others may follow.

Morse and Thursday investigate the poisoning death of a former detective sergeant at the "Roxy" movie theater – only to find that an employee of the establishment has also died under suspicious circumstances. While Thursday suspects a connection to growing unrest in Oxford"s underworld, a visiting veteran movie star believes a mysterious Egyptian curse is to blame. Morse has other ideas again.

A woman"s disappearance leads Morse into unforeseen areas as he discovers secrets at odds with the reported lifestyle of the wife and mother. When not just one but two dead bodies turn up, the case gets blown wide open. Meantime, a truck-hijacking that results in the death of the driver further convinces Thursday of gangster involvement.

The military closes ranks after a murder at a local army base, and the police investigation gets complicated when it emerges that Thursday"s soldier son, Sam, may be involved. Elsewhere in town, a violent protest outside a hairdressing salon reveals simmering racial tensions and yet another surprising participant.

When their investigation into a death at an international sporting event is brought to an abrupt end, Thursday turns his attentions to a domestic abuse case. However, Morse is not willing to walk away and soon finds himself embroiled in a world of espionage, big business, and the Oxford establishment. The more he discovers, the more he puts his career on the line.

Morse goes undercover at an exclusive boys" school where a teacher has mysteriously disappeared. After a body is unexpectedly discovered, the young detective must decide who he can trust and how he can unlock the school"s dark secrets. Thursday focuses on Oxford"s criminal underworld, this time with tragic results.
