The competition kicks off as host and mentor David Bromstad gives 12 hopeful designers their first challenge: to make over rooms in their new Hollywood home. Guest panelist Daisy Fuentes joins Genevieve Gorder and Vern Yip to evaluate each finished space.

The designers must transform white rooms using only what they find at a home and garden store. In addition, for the first time in the show's history, the challenge takes place in a public area, where passersby can view the designers' progress.

Kris Kardashian Jenner recently purchased a 30-year-old chiropractor's office and wants to convert it into the new Jenner Communications headquarters. The designers must bring new life to an outdated reception area, kitchen, office and conference room.

In this indoor-outdoor challenge, the designers work with two neighboring homeowners to redesign a family room that connects to an adjacent outdoor space. They must also demonstrate their ability to host on-camera by giving a clever design tip.

To celebrate the 125th anniversary of Hollywood, the designers work with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to create several lounges for a star-studded party. Each lounge must be inspired by famous design styles of the past.

HGTV Magazine editor-in-chief Sara Peterson joins David to deliver this week's challenge: the designers must create designer kitchens worthy of a feature in HGTV Magazine.

The final four competitors design condos inspired by different colors, and they appear on the TV show The Talk to give color design tips.

For their last challenge before the finale, the designers must turn the unconventional space of a yurt into a fantasy bedroom suite.

The last two finalists will create the pilot episode of a dream design show that they think will get them the HGTV Design Star crown. Also, the remaining finalists must create an amazing room for real homeowners.
