The Sharmas struggle to cope with the culture shock of being educated foreigners in a small working class village, but the doctor's gentle bedside manner and understanding of human nature helps win over the local people. To the dismay of his wife, Dr. Sharma refuses her appeals to leave until he has exposed a cover-up at the coal mine detrimental to the miners' health.
