Antiques Road Trip

Veteran antiquers Charlie Ross and James Braxton start out amidst the hop gardens and orchards of Kent. They drive around in a bright red classic Alfa Romeo, visiting some of the county's finest antique shops. Along the way, they explore a cold war submarine and discover how Pocahontas came to Kent, before arriving at an auction in Washington, West Sussex.

Charlie, James and their little Red Alfa, called Nelly, take in some of the finest Roman mosaics in Britain and discover the story of an Arts and Crafts masterpiece, before whizzing towards a Wokingham auction.

James Braxton and Charlie Ross are shopping their way from Buckinghamshire to the Cotswolds. Charlie buys something he calls "ghastly," and James makes a purchase purely on his sense of smell. But will these strange strategies pay off at the auction? They also take a trip along the towpath of the Grand Union Canal and find out about the incredible work of the codebreakers of WWI.

Charlie Ross and James Braxton enjoy the West Country and acquire antiques along the way. James hopes an antibacterial purchase will see him clean up at auction, while Charlie invites a dealer to join him for Christmas dinner -- so long as she brings her Edwardian silver candlesticks. They also take in a visit to a gothic cathedral and discover the story, and taste, of Porlock Bay oysters.

It's the last leg of the journey for Charlie Ross and James Braxton, and they visit antique shops in Somerset, Devon and Dorset and enjoy a quick dip in the waters of the 'English Riviera.' The competition will be decided by the final lots -- James has invested in 'the power of cute,' while for Charlie, sticking to what he knows best, it's brown furniture.

Seasoned antiquers, Anita Manning and Charles Hanson, head out in a Triumph Stag, hunting out hidden gems in the shops of West Scotland. On the way they find out about Glasgow's famous fire-fighting dog and discover how the area once had the biggest sewing machine factory in the world, before ending at an auction in Hamilton. Who will claim victory -- the playful beagle or the peasant woman?

Anita Manning and Charles Hanson tour the Kingdom of Fife where Charles falls for an old teddy and Anita loses her heart to Shakespeare. And in the Scottish borders, Charles Hanson goes on the trail of Hawick's motorcycle racing legend Jimmie Guthrie. Then, Anita fancies a fish tea and Charles can't resist the lure of the River Tweed. But who will land a good catch at auction in Dumfries?

A jaunt in the Lake District takes Anita Manning and Charles Hanson to Keswick, Kendal, Cockermouth and Penrith. Time is on Anita's side when she fancies a brass-faced Glasgow-style clock. Anita also picks up an unlikely date in one antique shop while Charles walks out with a King Charles Spaniel. And Charles is beefed up when he takes on a champion wrestler in a fight.

While Charles Hanson plays it canny in Edinburgh, Anita Manning blows every penny of her budget. Exchanging four wheels for three, Anita splashes out on a vintage pink girls' trike while Charles takes tea, 18th century style. Anita learns the difference between Scottish and English remembrance poppies at the factory where they are made, and Charles gets a lesson in tartan weaving.

In Scotland, Charles Hanson comes back with a sporran while Anita Manning revives the Auld Alliance with some expensive French transactions. Anita is reduced to tears by Charles' attempts to master the local lingo. It's a final fling on this Caledonian buying adventure but who will be on their last legs at the auction over the border in North Shields?

Experts Paul Laidlaw and Margie Cooper, in a Morris Minor, start their travels in Lincolnshire. Margie visits a haunted antique shop, and also buys a bevy of antiques, including a large Royal Dux figurine. Paul hunts for militaria and picks up some interesting plunder. While Margie heads back to school in Barton-upon-Humber, Paul finds out about the origins of a chewy cake in Pontefract.

Paul Laidlaw and Margie Cooper kick things off in medieval York. Hoping to repeat his 20,000 pounds success, Paul has high hopes for a mysterious little Islamic pot. Margie's on the right track when she secures a deal on a Hornby trainset.

The rain fails to dampen Paul Laidlaw and Margie Cooper's spirits in Scarborough. Paul hears about a WWI hero who continued to spend a fortune on collectibles while under fire. Margie heads to Whitby to find out about local sailors who went to sea in birds' nests. Has Paul gambled too much and allowed Margie to catch his lead?

On the way Paul gets excited about bus conductors while Margie sweetens the deal with a very peculiar honey separator. Paul's vast knowledge of militaria helps him find an unusual collectible from WWI, and Margie hopes a gruesome find will attract big bids.

Raj Bisram and Catherine Southon start their Road Trip in Cambridge. Catherine falls for an 18th century silk tapestry and finds a delightful Victorian letter seal. Meanwhile, Raj springs for a Francis Flint print and silver candelabras.

Raj Bisram and Catherine Southon begin today's trip in Norwich. A detour to Swaffham has Raj learn about the quaint market town's unlikely connection to Tutankhamun. And Catherine hears about the region's ferocious warrior queen, the legendary Boudica. Raj blows almost his entire budget, while Catherine purchases a little silver skier for a few pounds but attracts big bids at auction.

This time round, Catherine Southon gets to the point with a propelling pencil while Raj Bisram hopes to get ahead at auction with some 19th century Italian hatpins. Detours around East Anglia allow Catherine to learn how melons have helped to save millions of lives while Raj meets an endangered horse with a significant history in these parts.
