Saddled with alimony and gambling debts, Henry is tempted into taking on three cases at once by his senior clerk, Ray Scanlon, to help alleviate his financial situation. He puts his reputation on the line for a seemingly unwinnable murder case.

Henry risks a misconduct charge when he represents an obsessive father who is convinced his daughter was raped and murdered at a party. Meanwhile, Henry's affair with Polly is complicated by an unexpected friendly visit.

When a 12-year-old girl is accused of murdering a nine-year-old, Henry is persuaded into the prosecution. But as he goes up against devious defense lawyer Marcel Crane, Henry soon realizes that his child witnesses may be less than innocent.

Henry takes on the appeal of Peter McKee, a difficult client convicted of murdering his partner through his involvement in a bizarre sex triangle ten years before. Meanwhile, Henry and Cleo grow closer in an unexpectedly personal way.
