As the early hours of August 9th, 1945 unfolded, Japanese observers noticed the presence of two B-29 bombers from the United States Army Air Forces. These aircraft had previously been seen over the city of Kokura, yet they had not released their payloads. Consequently, Japanese officials concluded that the bombers were likely engaged in a surveillance operation.
