The rolling hills of Wales are a sanctuary for wildlife including a magnificent bird of prey, the red kite. If not for the remoteness of the mountains and the help of locals, the bird may not be circling the skies today.

The highlands of Scotland provide a last chance for survival for some of the rarest mammals in Britain, including the pine marten, hardly seen by day, and the Scottish wildcat, an animal on the verge of extinction.

The red squirrel is a true native to Britain, found in the patches of forests throughout the country. However, the gray squirrel has displaced it, causing the number of red squirrels to fall dramatically.

Years ago, experts realized the water vole was in serious decline in Britain. However, conservationists have reintroduced them to parts of England.

The west coast of Scotland is a haven for one of Britain's most charismatic creatures, the otter. While they were once a common sight throughout the country, since the 1950s they have disappeared from much of the United Kingdom.
