Dr. Tertius Lydgate is put in charge of the fever hospital in Middlemarch. Meanwhile Dorothea Brooke becomes infatuated with the aging scholar Edward Casaubon.

After celebrating their marriage, Casaubon and Dorothea honeymoon in Rome. But when Casaubon's restless young cousin calls on them, he and Dorothea have much in common. Dr. Lydgate discovers he has enemies.

Fred Vincy is anxious to know to whom Featherstone will leave his fortune. Casaubon is furious when Ladislaw visits Dorothea. Lydgate and Rosamond's wedding goes ahead.

As tensions continue to mount between Casaubon and Ladislaw, Dorothea is caught in the middle. Meanwhile Dr. Lydgate is surprised to discover his wife's extravagant spending and Arthur Brooke continues to set his sights on parliament. Dorothea is shocked to learn of the codicil to Casaubon's will.

Now a widow, Dorothea seeks advice from Dr. Lydgate on who to replace her late husband in his role of chaplaincy. Dr. Lydgate's cousin, Captain Lydgate comes for an extended visit and strikes a great friendship with the doctor's wife. Meanwhile Arthur Brooke's quest for parliament becomes embroiled in controversy and Ladislaw is out of a job. An unwelcome visitor brings bad news for Bulstrode.

Ladislaw vows to quit Middlemarch for good once he learns the terms of Casaubon's will. Dr. Lydgate's financial problems worsen and his marriage grows increasingly bitter with the prospect of bankruptcy.

Unbeknownst to him, Dr. Lydgate's wife Rosamond writes to his uncle Godwin asking for money. When Mr Raffles dies at Nicholas Bulstrode's house, Dr. Lydgate becomes implicated as an accomplice. Having returned to Middlemarch, Ladislaw declares his love for Dorothea.
