American pilot Cliff Brandon (Victor Mature), fighting the Japanese in China, finds himself the unintentional "owner" of a Chinese housekeeper, Shu-Jen (Li Hua Li). The unlikely couple falls in love and marries, but not without tragedy brought on by the war.
