When the bodies of three boys are found in different locations, Tony suspects a killer is luring children to their deaths. Each of the victims had been abused. Could the killer believe that ending their lives is justified to end their suffering?

When a series of brutal murders rocks the town, Tony notes that the killings bear the same MO as those of newly released killer "Mack the Knife" MacAdam—now supposedly reformed and enrolled as a PhD student in Tony"s class.

Tony is called back from a publicity tour for his latest book to join Carol"s investigation of a woman battered to death with an iron and ironing board. When additional bizarre but completely different deaths follow, Tony is baffled and struggles to create a profile for the killer.

Following a knock on the head, Tony wakes up in the hospital only to learn he has a brain tumor. As his behavior grows more erratic and his theories ever wilder, Carol wonders if his health is compromising his work. With a sniper picking off victims seemingly at random, can Tony get a grip in time to help Carol catch the killer?
