A market trader's van is hijacked and stolen on the moors. Nick investigates and suspects Lord Ashfordly's son, whom he later arrests for drink driving.

An elderly widower from London comes to stay in the village. He appears to know Nick, and his motives for the visit become clear when he puts someone close to Nick in danger.

Nick interrupts an armed robbery that is taking place at the Aidensfield's Arms and ends up locked in the cellar with George and Greengrass.

Disaster strikes as a local farmer suspect his cows to have foot and mouth disease. Nick and fellow officers are forced to have the whole village on lockdown, much to the dismay of local businesses.

A black soldier called Ken Marston is getting bullied by his racist Sergeant. Sergeant Nichols follows Marston during the exercises and intends to shoot him, as reports of racist abuse have been submitted to Nichols' superiors.

Rosie overdoses and Nick and Kate are left minding her children. Upon recovery, Rosie tells Nick that her husband is in jail for a crime he didn't commit.

Nick discovers a partially opened grave when he patrols the village at night. The grave belongs to Arthur Such. Meanwhile, Kate is contacted by Mrs. Fletcher, who's worried about her daughter's recent strange behavior.

David notifies Nick and Kate that his mother, Florence, has been struck by a car, despite urging her son not to tell anyone.

When the baby is abducted from its pram outside the Doubleday's toy store suspicion falls on a group of hippies who has taken over the abandoned Featherstone Hall and has had a clash with Mrs. Doubleday.

The annual funfair comes to Aidensfield, but the festivities are interrupted once 5-year-old Brian Currie who is camping out with his parents goes mysteriously missing.
