Innocent

David Collins is unexpectedly acquitted on a technicality, having served seven years of a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Tara. On the steps of the courthouse, he vows to bring to account those who lied at his original trial, to see the real killer jailed, and, most important, to regain custody of his two young children, who have been in the care of his waspish sister-in-law.

DI Cathy Hudson calls her small team together and tells them to recheck every statement that was made to the initial investigation. Meanwhile, Alice and Rob meet with their lawyers. Alice wants to deny David any contact with the kids, but she's advised against it.

The police turn their focus to Alice's motive. She and Tara had fought over Alice's inability to pay back £20,000 lent to fund private IVF treatment. The hostile texts they exchanged suggest a visceral hatred existed between them. David has his own complicated sibling relationship, and when Phil gets laid off, David gives him money to partly repay a debt of gratitude he feels towards his brother.

Cathy confronts Will, who vehemently denies sending the photos. When Cathy visits David to explain her suspension, Phil tells her in no uncertain terms that she's no longer welcome. David's attempt to earn money to support his children and get out of debt backfires after a newspaper sensationalizes his story.
