Edward Skipperton is a wealthy, hard-working businessman presently recovering from a recent divorce and quintuple bypass open-heart surgery. He is living in and renovating a beautiful old chateau in the Normandy region of France but has become determined to buy up the surrounding lands and river owned by Hubert De Gastine, his neighbor.

Michael and Gladys Herbert are a quiet, respectable, married couple who live in a large house with a garden somewhere in the English countryside. Christopher and Penny Waggoner are a well-off married couple living outside of London who both suffer from what might be called childish obsessions. Christopher works as a solicitor often living in a fantasy world where he dreams of "Louise", a woman he hasn't seen for twenty years, but whom he still loves.

Andre Delarue is a man in his forties who works in his small apartment as a proofreader for the New World Encyclopedia. He shares this apartment with his wife, Juliette, and his fourteen-year-old daughter, Michele. To supplement his modest salary, he draws a disability pension from an accident he was in that left him incapable of satisfying women.

Lee Mandeville is a middle-aged man who has traveled to his hometown in England, to settle some family business. He works as an antique dealer in Chicago and uses a large amount of the money he makes to pay for the costs of keeping his elderly mother in a nursing home here in England.
